La Luz Scholarship: BUILDING A BODY OF WORK IN THE REAL WORLD

The Company offering five full La Luz Scholarship to attend the Lecture Series “Building a Body of Work in the Real World” with Sasha Wolf and Special Guests. Sasha Wolf will teach a 7-week online project development class, closely examining and dissecting the elements needed for a fully developed photographic project. These La Luz Scholarship are available to photographers of any age and location who are experiencing financial difficulties.

Please keep in mind that this Lecture Series will be conducted entirely in English. Wolf will examine the concepts of recurring motifs and forms in the work, the importance of elements such as a distinct color palette and point of view, as well as the relationship between concept and the aesthetics you choose to work with, through lectures presented on a wide range of photographers.

She will also discuss various working methods, such as short, medium, and long-term projects, research-based projects, and projects that emerge organically via a “shoot first, edit later” approach. She will talk about work that begins with a preconceived idea as well as projects discovered through the editing process.

All of the work discussed will be loosely classified as post-documentary or observational, that is, work that engages with the world as it is. This Lecture Series is designed for fine art photographers working on serial, project-based bodies of work, and it is open to photographers of all levels of experience.

Perseverance and the Long-Term Photographic Project

La Luz Scholarship is open to photographers of any age or location who are experiencing financial difficulties. Please keep in mind that this workshop will be conducted entirely in English. Richard Renaldi will lead participants through the creation of a long-term photographic project in this workshop. Students can work on projects at any stage of their development, whether they are part of a continuing series or something unique to the class.

During each session, they will discuss the concepts and practices that go into developing a photographic project. Students will be required to participate in a self-critical dialogue that encourages reflection. Richard will make suggestions and provide tools to assist in the development of a strong and long-lasting photographic body of work.

There will be a discussion of both well-known and lesser-known photographic projects, as well as the why and inspiration behind the themes in each of the students’ work. Participants in this workshop will also be asked to comment on and form an opinion about the work of their classmates. This workshop will be delivered online via Zoom.

PUBLISH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK: AN ONLINE EDUCATIONAL SERIES

Publish Your Photography Book is a guide to the critical decision points in producing a book of your photographs, clarifying the similarities and differences between being published and self-publishing your book, and the critical factors artists should consider when making decisions about the materiality, marketing, and placement of a book.  These scholarships are available to photographers of any age and location who are experiencing financial difficulties. One of these La Luz Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. These sessions will be conducted entirely in English.

Mary Virginia Swanson and long-time co-author Darius D. Himes will inform and inspire attendees by sharing their knowledge and experiences in bringing long-term projects to book form. Our distinguished faculty will be joined in our virtual classroom by thirteen Special Guests who are prominent members of the photobook community, including editors, designers, book producers and publishers, curators, and published / self-published artists, and will provide critical insight into each stage of the publishing journey. The course concludes by sharing the steps required to successfully launch your book, introduce it to those who share an interest in the subject of your work, and place it in today’s growing community of collectors and collections of photobooks.
